It is said this issue has affected around 11 million vehicles. Here is the list of affected cars:

2009–2015 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0L TDI

2009–2015 Audi Q7 3.0L V-6 TDI

2009–2016 Volkswagen Touareg 3.0L V-6 TDI

2010–2015 Volkswagen Golf 2.0L TDI

2010–2015 Audi A3 2.0L TDI

2012–2015 Volkswagen Beetle 2.0L TDI

2012–2015 Volkswagen Passat 2.0L TDI

2013–2016 Porsche Cayenne Diesel 3.0L V-6

2014–2016 Audi A6 3.0L V-6 TDI

2014–2016 Audi A7 3.0L V-6 TDI

2014–2016 Audi A8/A8L 3.0L V-6 TDI

2014–2016 Audi Q5 3.0L V-6 TDI

Let’s assume a $30,000 purchase price average and 8% gross margin. Porsche has a high margin, Audi decent, but the bulk is coming from VW’s where their margins are razor thin. I may be too high with that 8%, but the $30k and 8% are estimates.

With those factors [(11MM*30k)*.08] the profits would have been $26.4Bn. This is probably the high end of earning and this doesn’t factor in operational contributions.

8% is a little high, but not far off. I think I remember seeing the average profit margin on VW’s was about $2200

I agree. I was looking back at their history and it fluctuates a lot. Weirdly they had a 23% margin at one point.

I used the total company data plus another chart I found to try to get a reasonable %, but it is hard

I didn’t go too in depth because I didn’t have the time, but hopefully I’m in the realm of how much they made. Definitely take my data with a grain of salt (or two).

It’s worth noting that those are just the affected models in the US and Canada - about 650k vehicles IIRC.

What, are the 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 TDI not affected?

I have no idea. I just took the list the site provided me. As I said, my guesstimate was a high-level guesstimate.

No idea. I just copied and pasted the list from here. What I typed out was just a quick estimate.

They are.

Basically, the list of affected vehicles is every model year 2009 through 2016 TDI in the US, and every Euro 5 TDI outside of the US (so approximately 2007-2008ish to 2013-2014ish).
